What other Javascript do you have? I tried it on my test forum and it also works.
There could be something on the codes on your JS Management that clashes with the avatar code.

Well, how do you make work of the variables? So it means you're using some Javascript right? 
Try to disable the Announcement where you put the variable. That's the last thing i can help you with.
The code is working fine on PunBB.
